BS KIDS BEAT

VOLUME 8                                                FALL 2009

BS KIDS

Fall is in full gear and with that comes the craziness of the holiday season. BS KIDS wishes you
and your family the happiest of holiday’s this season and let’s hope that 2010 is a GREAT year
for everyone. We’ve done some re-design on our website, when you have a few moments;
check it out at www.bskids.net. We are looking for feedback, so if you have any ideas or
suggestions about things you would like to see, please let us know!

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH FAMILY LAW

2010 looks to be a very interesting year! Child support guidelines in both Massachusetts and
New Hampshire are up for review. In addition, shared parenting continues to be a *hot* topic in
both states. In New Hampshire, HB 139: Relative to the determination of Parental Rights and
Responsibilities has put to an interim study with Rep. Dan Itse Chairman of the Committee. The
Committee is supposed to file their report for a House vote on January 6, 2010. If you have any
thoughts, concerns or comments, please send your support to Rep. Itse at: itsenh@comcast.net.
In Massachusetts, HB 1400 – the shared parenting bill will go before the Legislature after the
first of the year. Enzo Pastore is spearheading this campaign and you can contact him at www.
fathersandfamilies.org.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

The new Legislative Service Requests have been introduced in New Hampshire. Both the
House and Senate have introduced over 700 bills for public sessions. Below is a listing of the
critical LSR’s that BS KIDS will be tracking over the next year. Once these LSR’s have bill
numbers we will publish them on our site. Until then, we can’t really tell the guts of the bills, just
that they have been entered for upcoming Legislative Public Sessions.

Divorce in America: Ind., Fla. counties are tops

By TAMARA LUSH and DEANNA MARTIN, Associated Press Writers Tamara Lush and Deanna
Martin, Associated Press Writers Thu Sep 24, 9:45 am ET
ISLAMORADA, Fla. – It's easy to see why bookkeeper Linda Mortimer moved to the Florida
Keys 20 years ago: the impossibly blue water, the year-round sunshine, a lifestyle so laid-back
that every day is like a Jimmy Buffett lyric.
What Mortimer didn't anticipate was falling in love — and then getting divorced less than two
years after taking her wedding vows.
"I discovered after we got married that my husband had been divorced four times," said
Mortimer, as she finished a noontime burger while sitting at the bar at the Ocean View, a local
party spot and Mortimer's place of employment.
"I was his No. 5. He didn't understand why I got so upset."……..

NH lawmakers reject judicial power bills

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire lawmakers have killed bills meant to speed up the
legal process for divorcing couples and to ease the backlog of jury trials by letting retired judges
hear them.
One bill would have expanded the powers of judges past the constitution's mandatory retirement
age of 70. The judges would have been allowed to hear jury trials and sign orders without an
active judge approving them. The House let it die.
The other bill would have allowed marital masters to sign final orders in divorce cases without a
judge's approval. The Senate voted unanimously to let the bill die.
The state Supreme Court requested both bills……….

GET INVOLVED

Now more then ever, people need assistance. Especially around the holidays, there are a
myriad of ways to get involved in your local communities. We strongly advocate getting involved,
however you can. We appreciate that most people can’t monetarily get involved, but if you can
donate a couple of hours a week or month, your generosity will come back ten fold. You may
wish to check out your local churches or temples, local soup kitchens, local hospitals, wherever
you can to help make a difference. You can check on our website under the Get Involved
section to see several options. It does not take much to get involved, but the impact that you can
make is so important. Make getting involved one of your New Year’s resolutions!
