FAMILY LAW AND CHILDREN

Many children feel the effects of all the chaos surrounding them as their families are divided, split
up or disconnected.  Some of these children have a very difficult time in adjusting to their new
environments and schedules. They are forced to change their routines, their friends and in some
instance their schools. This can be a devastating experience for children and depending on their
ages, it can become overwhelming.  It is with older children, who are more established in their
routines, their schools and their environments, that we see the greatest changes.

These events include changing the way they dress, their interests and virtually all aspects of their
lives, especially in children who must go back and forth between their mother and father’s homes.
These children also will change their interests depending on whose house they are at. If mom is
interested in art, you will find these children expressing an interest in arts and crafts, while at dad’
s house, if he is interested in sports, these kids will then become the athlete they presume their
father always wanted.  It’s a constant tug of war and in most cases the parents don’t even realize
this is going on.  It’s very hard on children to adjust to their new surrounds, especially when they see
their parents emotionally upset about their new circumstances too.

Everyone needs to know how to adapt. It is imperative to realize that how you act in Church is very
different from how you would act on the football field; however, children who exhibit a complete
difference in behavior are in big trouble. They are so concerned with seeking parental approval that
they become over-adaptive.  They have become so accustomed to pleasing everyone else they forget
about themselves.  These children become very vulnerable to peer pressure and because their
primary fears of rejection, anxiety and abandonment are present in their everyday lives and if they
get involved with the wrong crowd, they will start taking on these characteristics too.  That’s why it’
s so important to not only realize the affect that all of these changes are having on you as the
parent, but more importantly what types of effects these changes are having on your children as
well. There are many counselors and support groups available to children and as a parent; it’s your
responsibility to seek them out. Talk to your children about sudden interests that they have, why
they have become interested, if it is something that they do at their other parents’ house. Get
involved!  We here at BS Kids have many resources available to both parents and children to help
them get back on the right track. Talk to one of our counselors today or if you prefer you can e-mail
our counselors at kids@bskids.net.  We are here to help!
